The Address-in-Reply is the formal response of the House to the speech made by the Governor at the opening of a new Parliament.

| 1 | Acceptance. Traditionally, a newly elected government member is chosen to accept the Governor’s speech by asking ‘that the Address-in-Reply to the speech of the Governor to both Houses of Parliament be agreed to by this House’. |

Debate. Once the Governor’s speech has been formally accepted, a major debate follows. Members may speak freely through the debate and are able to raise various issues. |

Inaugural speech. The Address-in-Reply is the first opportunity new members have to speak in the House. |
