The Speaker

Roles of the Speaker

Summary

The Speaker has four main roles.

The four main roles of the Speaker

1 Member of Parliament.  The Speaker is an elected member of Parliament representing a Victorian electorate.

2 Presiding over debates.  The Speaker chairs meetings of the Legislative Assembly.

3 Representative.  The Speaker represents the Legislative Assembly at State and other official occasions.

4 Administrative Duties.  The Speaker oversees the operations of the Legislative Assembly and, together with the President, oversees the operations of the Department of Parliamentary Services.
