The Speaker has four main roles.

| 1 | Member of Parliament. The Speaker is an elected member of Parliament representing a Victorian electorate. |
| 2 | Presiding over debates. The Speaker chairs meetings of the Legislative Assembly. |
| 3 | Representative. The Speaker represents the Legislative Assembly at State and other official occasions. |
| 4 | Administrative Duties. The Speaker oversees the operations of the Legislative Assembly and, together with the President, oversees the operations of the Department of Parliamentary Services. |
