The Serjeant-at-Arms

Ceremonial Duties

Summary

The Serjeant-at-Arms performs many ceremonial duties associated with the daily running of Parliament.

1

Chamber duties. The functions of the Serjeant-at-Arms in the Chamber are associated with the ceremony of Parliament and the maintenance of order and include:

·

Placing the Mace on the right shoulder and leading the Speaker into the Chamber.

·

Announcing the Speaker to members who stand in their places until the Speaker takes the Chair.

·

Shouldering the Mace and leading the Speaker from the Chamber when the House adjourns.

2

Ceremonial dress. On ceremonial occasions such as the Opening of Parliament, the Serjeant has traditionally worn the Windsor Court dress,  including knee breeches, buckled shoes, ruffled lace collar (a jabot) and cuffs, gloves and carried a cockled hat. However, this is no longer the case, and for the opening of the 55th Parliament in 2003, the Serjeant-at-Arms wore a black lounge suit.
