Victoria's Parliamentary History

Parliament in the 20th and 21st Centuries

Summary

Victoria has had an interesting parliamentary history.

Timeline of change

1 Parliament in the 20th Century. Parliament has seen many changes since 1856.

·

1 January 1901 — Victoria became an independent state.

·

1901 to 1950s — Victoria suffered from political instability.

·

1911 — Preferential voting introduced to the Assembly and was introduced into the Council in 1922.

·

1926 — Compulsory voting introduced in the Assembly and was introduced into the Council in 1935.

·

1955 to 1972Sir Henry Bolte  remained Premier for a record 6,288 days.

·

1982 to 1992 — The Labor Party led by John Cain, and subsequently Joan Kirner, won office and governed until 1992.

·

1992 to 1999 — The Liberal/National coalition, led by Jeff Kennett, defeated the Labor Party  and formed government

·

1999 to currentSteve Bracks led the Labor Party to victory in 1999 and following his resignation in July 2007, John Brumby became Victoria's 45th Premier.

Parliament in the 21st century. Parliament adapts to the 21st century.

·

Constitutional change — In 2003 the Parliament reformed the constitution; one of the reforms included fixed four year election dates.

·

Proportional representation. From 2006 onwards members of the Legislative Council are elected by proportional representation.
