Fact Sheet 6

Personal Explanations

Process

Summary

There is a process for members to follow before a personal explanation can be given in the House.

What to do and when it happens

1

The exact contents of the proposed statement must be given in writing to the Speaker in advance to ensure its appropriateness and to obtain the Speaker's approval.

2

A personal explanation must be made when there is no other question being debated. This is normally after question time or between debates on bills in the House.
