Fact Sheet 27

Parliamentary Committees

Reports by Committees

Summary

Committees report to Parliament on their investigations.

1

Tabling Committee Reports.  During an investigation, committees will often release discussion papers, and table interim reports.  When an inquiry is completed, a final report is tabled in the Assembly; see Fact Sheet 18: Documents tabled in the Legislative Assembly.

·

If Parliament is not sitting within 21 days of a committee adopting a report, the committee may choose to 'table' the report out of session, by giving a copy to the Clerk of each House, who makes it available to members.

·

Once tabled, reports are available from the committee’s website, from the committee’s office, or from the Assembly Procedure Office, where stocks allow.

·

Domestic committees tend to focus on day-to-day matters, rather than long-term investigations, but may table reports.  The Privileges Committee, however, reports to Parliament relatively often about right of reply; see Fact Sheet 11: Right of Reply by Persons Referred to in the House.

2

Statements.  Members may make statements about parliamentary committee reports once tabled, except for some reports by the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee; see Standing Order 41.

Search for statements on Hansard by choosing 'Statements on Reports' in the Activity field.

3

Government Response The government must respond to the recommendations made by joint investigatory committees, within six months of the final report being tabled.  Often the recommendations lead to changes in the law, but the government does not have to accept them.
