Documents Tabled in the Legislative Assembly

Types of documents tabled (in brief)

Summary

Broadly speaking reports and documents that are tabled take four main categories:

Overview of documents

Reports.  Victorian Government Departments and public bodies prepare reports of their operations at the end of each financial year. These reports are required by legislation to be tabled.

Petitions.  A petition is a request for action by a citizen or group of citizens.

Proclamations.  These are printed in the Government Gazette and announce when Acts or parts of Acts commence operation.

Statutory Rules.  These are regulations or similar rules which relate to an Act of Parliament. They are made by the Governor in Council.

Planning Schemes.  Amendments to planning schemes of local and regional areas are approved by the Minister and tabled under the Planning and Environment Act 1987.

Statements of Compatability. A statement is tabled under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 for every bill that is introduced into either House. The statement must state whether the bill is compatible with human rights and, if so, how it is compatible.
