Right of Reply by Persons Referred to in the House

Drafting a right of reply response

Summary

The Secretary of the Committee will liaise with the applicant about drafting a response. The applicant must comply with guidelines in drafting a response.

Drafting a right of reply response

The general guidelines are:

Length of response. Normally one to three pages is appropriate, depending on how complex the issues are.

Language used. The draft must be in moderate and appropriate language. Allowance will be made for applicants unfamiliar with parliamentary language.

Appendices. It is not appropriate to attach appendices to a response.

Availability of a response. After a response is ordered to be printed or incorporated into Hansard, it can be viewed on Parliament's website or obtained from the Procedure Office.
