Right of Reply by Persons Referred to in the House

Summary

The standard procedure for a right of reply submission is outlined briefly below.

Right of reply process (in brief)

Submission to the Speaker. The individual referred to in debate (the applicant) sends a written submission to the Speaker.

Consideration by the Speaker. If the Speaker is satisfied that the requirements under Standing Order 227 have been met, the submission is referred to the Privileges Committee.

Initial consideration by the Privileges Committee. The Committee reviews the submission see if it should be considered.

Detailed consideration by the Privileges Committee. The Committee reviews the submission and decides an appropriate response.

Recommendation of the Privileges Committee. If the Committee decides to consider the submission it may recommend to the House that:

·    no further action is taken; or

·    an approved response is published or incorporated into Hansard.
